10. The Day After Tomorrow
No list like this would be complete without a big budget Eco disaster blockbuster. And this global warming on steroids flick that changed ocean currents, created an ice age in a matter of weeks and had a tsunami wipe out New York City takes the cake. While it wasn’t a truly good film and it was beyond unbelievable, it was fairly entertaining and technically lots of what happened could occur in real life. Just not in the insanely short time span they portrayed it in.

9. Michael Clayton
An evil chemical corporation, a law firm who’s lead attorney has a moral awakening, conspiracy and murder, this film has it all. With a cast that includes George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Sydney Pollack, and what has to be Tom Wilkinson best role to date, you can’t go wrong with this environmentally themed corporate thriller.

8. Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey
This movie starring Sigourney Weaver is based on the true story of Dian Fossey, a zoologist who spent 18 years in the mountain forests of Rwanda studying gorillas. Over that time she became a bit of a celebrity, and was even on the cover of National Geographic in 1970. After years of seeing poachers killing off the very creatures she was trying to study and protect, she started to take action by promoting anti-poaching patrols, which are what most people believe to be the reason she was murdered.

7. SilkWood
Another true story, this time based on the life of Karen Silkwood, a plutonium processing plant worker turned labor union activist. After discovering many safety violations at the plant, she testified to the Atomic Energy Commission and shortly after was exposed to plutonium under suspicious circumstances. While the company claimed she was exposing herself, the evidence seemed to show that she was deliberately exposed in an attempt to silence her. After obtaining new documents, Silkwood was to meet with a reporter for the New York Times, but was found dead on her way to meet him. The result of what investigators ruled a one car accident. Even though no documents, which friends saw her leave with were found in the car or on her body.

6. A Civil Action
John Travolta, Robert Duvall, William H. Macy and Tony Shalhoub star in this based on a true story courtroom drama about the town of Woburn Massachusetts, whose children have been dying from leukemia at high rates. The lead attorney, Jan Schlichtmann played by Travolta is at first reluctant to take the case on, but grows attached and in the end obsessed after finding contamination of the towns water supply.

5. The China Syndrome
Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas play a TV news team who stumble onto a major story when the nuclear plant they are doing a piece on almost has a meltdown of which they filmed occurring. After reviewing the tape, they realize what happened and go about contacting the plants supervisor played by Jack Lemmon to see if he will tell them the truth. At first he shows no interest in helping them, but after the plant ignores his warnings, he turns whistleblower, ending in a climatic finale. This film had much of the nation on the edge of it’s seats due to the fact that the partial core meltdown at Three Mile Island happened just twelve days after The China Syndrome hit theaters.

4. Medicine Man
Sean Connery plays the eccentric Dr. Robert Campbell who has secluded himself in the Amazon rain forest for years. When his funding is about to dry up, the company he works for sends Dr. Rae Crane, played by Lorraine Bracco to evaluate the situation and cut his funding. When she arrives however, she learns that Campbell has found a cure for cancer but is unable to replicate the original serum. As they search the jungle to identify the ingredient that could save millions, loggers are moving in with plans to level the area to make way for roads deeper into the Amazon.

3. FernGully: The Last Rainforest
An animated children’s film that even adults can enjoy. Tim Curry, Robin Williams, Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater, Jonathan Ward and Cheech And Chong star in this environmentally themed movie. The film follows the magical inhabitants of a rain forest in Australia who transform one of the loggers destroying their jungle into a pint sized version of himself and introduce him to their world. Meanwhile the remaining loggers while cutting a tree release an ancient and evil polluting force called Hexxus, that is intent on destroying the forest and all of its inhabitants. With the help of the logger turned ally, they must confront Hexxus and the loggers to save Fern Gully.

2. Wall-E
This is one of those movies like fern gully that all ages can enjoy. In the future, the world has become so polluted that every human has left earth on a giant cruise ship like spacecraft, leaving robots to clean up the planet. Wall-E, the last robot remaining to clean up the mess, stumbles on to living plant life and shows it to a reconnaissance robot sent from the spaceship to detect if the earth can sustain life. After seeing it, the robot races back to the ship, while WALL-E hitches a ride with the robot he has fallen in love with. When Wall-E arrives he discover that over the years, humans have become even fatter and lazier than we already are. And generally have no recollection of what earth, or life beyond their own even is. When the ships computer, using centuries old directives tries to stop their return to earth, WALL-E must do everything in his power stop it, and show the humans that they can fight back, return to earth and restore the planet.

1. Erin Brockovich
Unemployed single mother of three, Erin Brockovich, asks her defeated lawyer for a job to make up for the loss. After giving her a position as a file clerk in the office, she stumbles onto files relating to the town of Hinkley and PG&E. Brockovich begins to suspect that PG&E is responsible for the towns many health problems and deaths, and convinces her boss to let her investigate the situation. After discovering that PG&E is responsible for the sickness and deaths in Hinkley, she makes it her mission to have them held accountable.
