If you want to run your house on solar or wind power you have to start with getting your home as energy efficient as possible. I am running a hybrid system that incorperates solar, wind and a grid interactive battery backup system. The diesel generator ties it all together in the event of a long term power outage.

Hey Thanks man that really helped a lot.

Thanks … love your setup !

Hey OBX
long time lerker here. Caught your vids being interested in solar and just wanted to say thanks for posting ur stuff. I’m learning a lot. Embarrassingly, I never thought about prepping till I got here. Figured the store would always be open. Keep up the great work and thanks again.

nice video ^-^ thanks for your sharing

@LDSPrepper It is amazing how little energy we can get by with compared to what we use. My original 1200w array would do a refidgerator and two freezers if you watched your draws. I added a little breathing room and doubled the size of my array now I just need to find the time to get on the roof and install..
Thanks for watching

@MrLugnutt They come from Cosco but I think they are not in all stores. And you welcome.

Thanks for the videos. Where would one get the fancy flashlight that comes on when the power goes off and the small emergency light shown just before the flashlight? Thanks in advance!

Hi. I was wondering how big your diesel generator is and what the fuel consumption is as I am looking at buying a generator ??
January 28th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
I totally agree. Prepare your house first. That is what I found. I am nowhere as far along as you. I have found we waste a ton of electricity because it is so cheap we don’t think about conserving. I’m really close to doing a 24 hour then 7 day test on strictly solar. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet because I know we still need to scale our electric use back. Great video. Thanks.

How often do you have a real power outage. And how long could you last on your batterys and generator before you simply ran out of all of your means of power. Also if you could change your system in anyway what would it be and why. Thanks and keep up the good work mate

There are several different companies to have to understand what is needed to run my house on solar electric power. There are three different systems to choose from a grid intertied system, grid intertied that contains a battery backup and a standalone system. Each one will have slightly different needs and materials though the main part of the system, the solar connection and conversion will be the same.

Nice Video

@aaadream No they are all 110v and run off the inverter only when the power is out. The only things in the house that are on full time solar are the DC freezers and the 12V lighting I showed, the rest is all on standby in the event off a power outage. All the solar from the main array is fed back in to the grid to maximize my battery life. Always good to here from you..

@K0R3619 I showed most of the low voltage lighting. The rest is standard 120v LEDs and CFLs. All the low voltage lighting is on one 5 amp curcuit on a photo cell so they come on from dusk till dawn. Thanks for watching..

Nice!!! Thanks Brother!

@greyhoundfriend123 When it comes to heating its time to build a fire or run the generator.

@kricotas I have 12 200W and 3 100W

You’ve probably answered this question a hundred times but I’ll ask any way….how much do you have invested in your entire off-grid system, as in the whole thing? Thanks.

I was thinking about saving up for a battery bank.I already have 2-45W solar panels…Some preppers say to use 6V batteries because they are meant for recharging. But are you using 12V?If so how do you prevent overcharging?

What kind of lights are those that “sit in the saddle” and only come on when power goes out?
January 28th, 2012 at 9:31 pm
Great video. Like some others, I would like to know the gage wire going to your LED lights over the bar and other places. Also, what type switches (e.g.12V or 120V). Thanks for sharing your knowlege. I learn a lot with each video.

Great setup! Can it withstand an EMP?
January 28th, 2012 at 11:11 pm
I worked at NASA in huntsville ala doing some drywall in 1970 in the room where tha astronauts practiced AND they didn’t have half as much good equipment as you….when it comes to solar you ARE da man…. thanks

Great video as always Brother. Maybe some day I’ll get the training wheel off, lol. Take care.

oh yeah its really solar energy can be easy. When the … Making your home Solar Ready involves preparation in three areas of … The pipe run or “chase” – where the pipes will be..! thanks for it..!
