Sam Says:
“So it says it’s equivalent to that much gas and will produce that much CO2 but it’s not actually producing any CO2 at all is it?”
Of course it is you retard, there is massive amounts of CO2 from the production/transportation/ packaging etc. Ur clueless. I dont have to ask if your american cuz u obv are you scum bag

I don’t even use a cell phone 3 others in my household do and I will bet we have 6 unused phones in this house. Who gives a damn about the actual figures? Recycle will it kill you? Every idiots wants to pick something apart because mabe they miss a fact or 2 read the over all message then do me a favor and gtf off the planet, I want it to still be here for my kids.
Just saying

September 21st, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I hate to be the one to say this but this is complete and utter trash. One cell phone uses the equiv energy of 17 gallons of gas a year?
Lets do some calculations. A gallon of gas burnt in an internal combustion engine and used to turn a generator will give you about 11kwh of electricity.
Lets be on the safe side here and say the cellphone has a ridiculously huge 5000mah battery ( mine is only 1100mah an iphone is somewhere around 1200mah) with a battery voltage of about 4.2 it means it holds about 21wh of power or .021kwh. Lets say the charging process is horribly inefficient and it takes 2x that amount of power to charge it. That means it would take .042kwh to charge this ridiculously huge cellphone battery. Now lets assume you completely drain the battery each and every day. So we multiply .042kwh and 365 days. Gives you 15.33kwh used by the phone. Thats well under 2 gallons of gas and the numbers I used are ridiculously on the safe side. In reality cellphones use well under the equivalent of 1 gallon of gas a year.
Yes recycle your cellphones and you don’t need to buy a new one every year. Do what you can to help the environment but don’t spread obviously false information.

Oh shoot I have to charge my phone.

Well im glade i live in virginia cause were run by a nuclear power plant, no co2 from us XD
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:38 am
Okay, don’t bite my head off, those of you who like to insult others who respond. I see a lot of disturbing statistics, but don’t find the message very clear. Are they proposing the we all use our cell phone less? Charge them less often? Recycle them? I wish that they would say what they want us to do.

Juveniles like these make me want to turn off comments on all my sites.
September 22nd, 2009 at 2:22 am
well i USE my phone while it charges so what does that make it?
also the phones wont produce any of that waste. so what if there is gold and silver in phones? you want to get it out? there is so little that it would probably cost more to retrieve it than to just leave it where it is.
as for the lead… it came from the earth and is going back to the earth. probably in a landfill where it wont be able to get to a water table.
why not just crate a monopoly to make one super perfect phone that lasts forever so we do not have to buy new ones?
while we are at it why not just cap all harmful acts, like electricity output.
September 22nd, 2009 at 6:07 am
This is good to know by many cellphone users in the world, especially by those in a third world country. They a major users of cellphone. If they want to prolong the life of our planet be cautious in buying a communication gadget. On the manufacturers side, they should be part of this. Creating an energy efficient cellphone is a huge help for the planet.
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:33 am
Don’t you guys read older posts before the childish comments. “The MJ figure you are referring to includes the impact of the entire life-cycle of the phone, including production, destruction”. Numbers look fine to me but the POINT is loud and clear. Some things just make sense and this does for sure! I’ll do what I can. I can use more time to play games on my phone anyway. Never knew that many people have phones.
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:40 am
This is very ‘informative’ because BIG NUMBERS!!!
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:47 am
I hate when people stereotype that Americans are ignorant or stupid. I don’t stereotype your nationality. I would say that makes you ” clueless” It might be true that other countries have better renewable energy and/or have reduced emissions more than America, but that does not mean that all Americans don’t give a shit about renewable energy. Personally I would love to see more wind turbines, solar panels, etc. but my country is much larger than those of Europe and therefore it has more people that slow down the process. All I’m trying to say is that you shouldn’t judge people on their nationality big bot. If you do then it is you that is “clueless.”
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:52 am
I do not know where or how they got their data but it seems flawed, I am sure that a smaller percentage of the population has cell phone subscriptions than 61%. Also how many of those cell phones are pre-paid throw away phones. The world health organization says that one third of the world is starving and that 3 billion people in the world today struggle to survive on US$2/day so I guess that others have money for a cell phone… http://library.thinkquest.org/C002291/high/present/stats.htm
none that less still a good diagram, I always unplug my cell phone charger when not in use http://www.ehow.com/how_4781905_reduce-phantom-power.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:59 am
so since were all ecoscientists today, like they said did you take into account all of items that surround this industry? and you equate it to one gallon of gas? , how about the all of the places you charge your phone? like most americans (which im proud to be) you probably charge your phone in your car? or how about the mounds of batterys that time out on these things from overcharging or mountains of “temporary batteries” that this industry has produced?.. you dont need to be an engineer to figure out that its just .. not good. this is an awsome product and its about freakin time someone tacked this.
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 am
I recycle my phone by putting it in a blender and then scattering the resulting powder in my neighbors back yard.
And all those people who bash America, you’re just jealous cause you live in some back water country whose biggest contribution to the world is, well, nothing.
Don’t forget, the internet, computers, electricity would not even exist without America.
Without America, you wouldn’t be able to get on your self righteous horse and tell us all how it is from the comfort of your home.
Of course, if you really want to know how stupid you are…

There is NO way that 61% of people on the planet have a cell phone. would like to see where these numbers came from. 61% is a bold statement. Let’s break down some numbers:
1. Africa makes up 15% of the world population, and I think everyone would agree here that the majority of the people living in Africa do not have cell phones, so let’s say approx 500 mil from Africa do NOT have cell phones.
2. China totals 1 billion of the population, and India totals 1 billion of the population. After a quick look up, approximately 50% of China has cell phones, and 10% of India has cell phones, so that’s approximately 1.5 billion gone from China and India.
So now we’re 500 mil down from Africa, and 1.5 bil down from China and India, putting our number at 4 bil cell phone users. That is saying that every other person on the planet has a cell phone. Likely? Not at all.
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:54 am
Why not make this effective by putting a link at the bottom of the image to a company that does recycle and refurbish phones, and does a great job of it too?
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:59 am
…..”Of course it is you retard, there is massive amounts of CO2 from the production/transportation/ packaging etc. Ur clueless. I dont have to ask if your american
I suppose your excuse for poor grammar and manners is that by using fewer key strokes you are saving energy? Americans can be selfish and certainly consume more than they produce–no denying that. However, those traits are NOT limited to Americans. Grow up, learn how to have a proper debate, and join the human race.
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Having a cell phone saves lives, when people are stranded or injured. Why not suggest we get rid of TVs, landlines, computers, and home electricity? Let’s talk about an industry that creates more pollution than cell phones & is far less efficient … you won’t believe what it is: meat production. You can feed 8-10x as many people on a plant-based diet. It’s crazy in a country where some people go to sleep hungry, we have so much good food, we throw it away by feeding massive amounts of it to pigs or chickens. We waste up to 5,000 gallons of fresh water to create one pound of streak, in a country where some cities are under water restrictions and we don’t even have enough water to shower. Let’s keep things into perspective.
September 22nd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Lindsay:
Those statistics are quite accurate. My son is in the telecom industry and know that those numbers reflect the global population. There are some countries that have little running water or no electricity and everyone has a cell phone (walking miles a day to charge it). Just google some of this or call around, you will see. Actually the largest growing populations of cell phone users are in third world countries. Do some research and lets not take the US for granted. I will hang this up in my science class – thanks!
September 22nd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I thought the add was informative. A little confusing in the beginning, but I did like it. I have a phone that is probably 5 or 4 years old now. I can’t believe people change there phones every year. I don’t know many people who do, but all my friends are poor. Mine can only call and receive phone calls from people, but then again I have an ipod touch to listen to music and what not with out over charging for these technology of doom. I bet someone will say that ipod is technology of doom too, Which is obvious they keep making a new product every year and rich kids want the latest things then throw out the old. But then again why don’t we talk about the people reading this website on a computer that pretty much everyone in north America owns. I bet that is worst in comparison.
I guess when my phone dies I’ll probably recycle it too. I hope they DO recycle it. I know some big company so called recycle programs says they recycle, but then just dumped it in a regular disposable like we would do.
September 22nd, 2009 at 1:39 pm
1. The science behind the statistics is not in order.Victor has done some calculations but I repeat the same calculations here. 1 gal of Gas =3.785 lit= 3.785×0.75 kg= 2.85×10500 k.cal =29806×4.186 kJ= 124.768 MJ.
Assume IC Engine effi of 0.30; alternator effi of 0.80; then 1 gal of gas gives 124.768×0.30×0.80= 29.944MJ which is equal to 8.317 kWh of electrical energy available at the wall plug.
2. Cell phone battery capacities range from 900 mAh to 1500 mAh. Assuming an average fig of 1200 mAh; and most batteries are Li-ion or Ni-Mh with a voltage of 3.7V and further that each cell is charged once every day ; energy used by one Cell phone in an year = 3.7×1200=4440 mW x 365days= 1.62 kWh. Assuming charge4r effi of 0.5 the energy drawn for a cell phone in a year=1.62/0.5=3.2 kWh. This is equivalent to 3.2/8.317=0.385 gal of gas per phone per year.
3. The statement “4221 Mj is equivalent to 32 gal of gas is incorrect. One might interpret that to generate 4221Mj it requires 32 gal of gas.
4. In US major portion of electricity is from Nuclear power plants. All these calculations and statistics mean nothing. Never the less the amount of toxic waste the cell phones generate is phenomenal. The only way to control is to make long lasting phones (no frequent changes in models or features) and batteries.
5.The calculations are irrelevant and senseless if you look at the CO2 generated by cars fitted with 400-600 hp engines while they need only 100 hp.
Folks, wake up. Give up using gas guzzlers. Save the environment.
September 22nd, 2009 at 4:15 pm
i dont have a cell phone, i dont like idle chatter and most people with cell call because they are bored and not because they have interesting conversation.
for those who are really afraid of the sound of silence, can’t we make a greener phone by letting people handcrank the phone to power it up?
how about something new..talking to rl people around us.. like neighbors?

Hi people, I’m from Mexico and love America, but also France and EC.
I beleive we the people have nothing to do with the, is the phone manufactur companies that are little slow in making solar chargers for our phones as they do not make eco vehicles. My self could say if I did not had a cel phone I would probably could not be so profitable in my job, Cel phones permit me to move and allways on the run and not miss an important call. Otherwise I have to go by car or be at my office waiting for one call instead I’m always working.
Let’s think on how we can produce eco products so people can use them and not blame the consumer, we are just responding to technology and the fast moving times. Lets work on Hydrogen on demand clean fuels and reduce the risk of tank explotions.
Take care everybody and love the planet and the people in it!!!!!

The question is “How did we do it without cellphones?” and second – we sell more cellphones everyday – the process of destruction is irreversible – we are just trying to slowing down the process.
Politicians are talking, economists are analyzing, engineers are trying to make eco friendly products and we are trying to reduce the use of the car, electricity, and what else ??!!
Very soon, we will be told that if we chew our food, we are using energy and we pollute the air.
Thank you,

I still use my first ever cell phone. It’s 5 years old but still working great. Well, sort of. Not buying a new cell phone every year may be a good idea too?
Siva has good points though. The toxic waste from cellular phone batteries is something we need to deal with.

Why Not ‘Charge Up’ your phone in your car?
September 24th, 2009 at 9:49 am
“J” Did you see what they are advertising ? Its not cellphones it a pretty cool app concept. Why hasnt anyone done this before. Just got it for my G1. The point is that you get the app and make your cellphone green so its like fixing everything that sucks. Read some more before you leave stupid comments genius. The carbon credit thing with the tree is very cool.

It gets better. It turns out all cell phones require use of a rare mineral, that occurs only in a part of Africa in which the last remaining gorilla troops live, and which are, consequently, going extinct even faster, due to habitat destruction.
Not that you care, right?
September 24th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
there are much bigger fish to fry than cell phones like cars
September 24th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Stevo
Almost, but not quite, true. While the production in a nuclear power plant doesn’t produce any co2 emissions in itself, there are substantial emissions from several related sources:
* Construction of the plant, very heavy concrete constructions, results in large co2 emissions
* Mining and processing of the fuel
* Waste processing and storage
Of course it comes nowhere close to what a fossil-fuel plant emits, bit co2-free, it actually isn’t.
September 24th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
there are bigger fish to fry than cars or cell phones….. like most industrial refineries and factories. but on the other hand why would we blame corporations that would make sense, dont get me wrong i have no doubt that auto exhaust isn’t helping things, but thats less than half the problem. i see it as an attack the consumer so they spend more when in reality these “green” cars arent green at all. look up how many chemicals are poured into the atmosphere making batteries, then look at how many more are made disposing of them, then try telling yourself its better for the environment… do you see what im getting at?
September 25th, 2009 at 7:47 am
@stuart
You really cannot blame anyone for stereotyping Americans.
I have not see people of any other country hold signs in Support of Iraq war that said “Take their oil”, “We need oil”
America is the only country where people who eat chicken call themselves vegetarian.
Then we all have watched “Jaywalking” by Jay Leno
The only country that has blogs by the “common america” who are trying to “prove” that global warming is a scam, renewable energy is not practical and so on.
The only country that believe what the “industry” says and also argues and stands by it.
IF today anything is wrong with the world is because of American’s ignorance.
Fox news spreading that drinking coke is better than drinking water, dont even get me started.
Idiocracy has already hit america.
The sad part is other countries are following suit.
Whatever food additives, chemicals, pesticides, vaccines, and drugs have got “approved”(because of Americans ignorance and low IQ, cause they were too dumb to know they were being taken for a ride and they even “shut” the mouth of the minority of Americans who wanted to get things right) and are being “directly approved” since it “america” approved it.
Well I do not stereotype americans or any race because I personally know and interact with that “Minority” of americans who are the “doers” The ones who are still holding this country together. They are fighting a losing ware against this wave of ignorance that has “infected” the remaining Americans.
But all I can do is pray and with glory to them.
About this post wonderful never thought of cell phones in this way.
I was going to dump my cell phone anyways, when I made enough money that I could not care a damn what people thought of me(cause if you are in business people somehow feel that without a cell phone you are “unaccessible” and hence do want to do business with you). But that was because of the health concerns.
This one is a bigger concern.
Good work Thanks for spreading the word
September 25th, 2009 at 10:32 am
I dont get it, do you need to buy a new phone every year??? I have never had a phone for that short period.
September 25th, 2009 at 10:58 am
My annual electric usage at my condo is roughly 8,000 KWH, or 28,800 mega joules. Is this propaganda trying to tell me that 15% of my bill was spent on charging my cell phone?!? Or better yet, 30% because I have a roommate with a cell phone! My god, and all these years I thought it was the central AC, electric hot water heart, refrigerator, electric stove top, oven and my douchebag roommate who leaves the lights on!
I get the point (recycle & be mindful of your consumption), but lets not blow things out of proportion.

Maybe you are right, but I do not agree with you.The cell phone has become a part of human life.Cell phone has been changing people’s life and the world. Maybe it’s due to all the bashers of other countries, namely the U.S., that we still have problems like cell phone pollution in the first place. This is a discussion about pollution, not how ignorant you think a certain people may be. If we could accept each other instead of being resentful each of the powers of the world could perhaps work collaboratively on smarter energy sources instead of rubbing in the other’s face how small a carbon footprint they have.
P.S. To say that all Americans are oblivious about how much energy the country uses is in turn making you look as ignorant as you make an American out to be.

I think it’s really great that people are trying to get U.S. citizens involved in preserving the environment, but this ad is absolutely absurd. First of all talking on your cell phone does not emit any CO2 into the atmosphere, and whether or not the production of cell phones does is irrelevant considering that is never even mentioned in the ad. Talking and charging your cell phone uses ENERGY which is infinite. As long as there are living things in the world, energy will exist. Also I would like to point out that charging your cell phone does not require gas. Therefore, by not charging your cell phone you aren’t wasting gas, you may be causing a slight decrease in your ELECTRICiTY bill, but that is about the extent of it. Just because so many joules is equal to so many gallons of gas does not mean that you can convert that energy into gas. But finally, to address the proposition of “recycling your phones”: yes, landfills will fill up with phones if you don’t recycle them, but what happens if you do recycle them? That material will eventually be used to make similar products in factories which emit CO2 into the atmosphere. The really sad thing is that people look at this ad and are immediately convinced, no questions asked. Anyone can write things in big colorful letters with cute pictures advertising something they claim is “the truth”, that doesn’t mean that they’re right.

Alexis- do some research cause your wrong on so many levels. Energy is infinite ? while true, we arent talking about body heat here- Tell that to the people in the Sudan or Rural China or India ? Cellphones don’t run as living beings do, with hearts pumping and souls ‘creating their own energy. What are you talking about ? Recycling can mean using them again too and not just crushing and reproducing items (but either is better than burying in your child’s backyard). If your ignorant about this- why not prove it wrong. I’m only challenging cause the numbers make sense to me and a ton of others it seems. You probably have your hubby or daddy paying your electric bills and you think charging things are free. Did you know you pay for electricity ? thats that bill that comes once a month that is probably paid for you. Great post.

Dude f off the guy. The website said that much CO2 is being used from CHARGING the phones every day, don’t go criticizing and blaming and forcing your clearly insufficient brain and ideas on us just because you hate America. Get a life, get a grip, and f off the internet you Troll. Check your data before you post hate, it really gives Europe and other countries which I am proud to be a part of a bad name which we don’t need. Be above the hate, especially on an environmentally impacting site.

You can get hand crank phone chargers but they are rubbish and take forever and so are the solar chargers and worse still they cost more CO2 to build than they save. My phone charger doesn’t cost any watts when plugged in and not in use. You can tell the bad ones cause they get hot. When your charger gets warm it heats you house. When you switch it off in the winter you probably get a tiny bit colder and turn up the heating a tiny bit. Also charging your car while driving is not saving the environment. First of all the car generates electricity from the alternator which puts slightly more stress on your motor. Try it in an old car. turn on the heater fan and lights and radio and wipers and here the engine change up to compensate. Secondly using your car to charge probably means sitting in a car a bit longer with the engine running trying to plug the damn thing in. If the engine is not running then it will probably run down the battery a little faster and mean more lead dumped in land fill. Finally most of the crass stupid arrogant comments on green issues come from Americans who compare a vastly bigger country like India or China to theirs despite the fact that China polutes more than anyother country in the world because it supplies those other countries with exported goods generated for the west by Chinese factories. Did I mention that the per captia figures are always massively different? Not all Americans are ignorant to green issues but the most agressive anti greens are almost always Americans. Thats how you can tell.

Sorry did I forget to mention that all the stats on this poster are complete rubbish?
Really where did they get this crap from? Save the environment? put on an extra jumper and use a hot water bottle !! You can waste a good years worth of car CO2 equivalent by just having the house heated to 26C through winter.

Oh and wear old wrinkly clothes. No ironing minimal washing and much better investment in the original manufacturing. Ironing is massively poluting compared to phone chargers. I tested by plugging in about 7 into a multi socket and got virtually nothing on draw <1w. Compare that to a 2Kw Iron for 1 hour or two ironing out the work shirts + washing machine for a couple of hours, you do the maths…

i do agree with this its not that hard recycle your phone. AND I do take offense to some of the comments that take digs at American Citizens….I’m one and if you got a problem with it keep it to yourself…i recycle and try very hard to conserve energy and limit waste!

If thats just a mobile phone or a lot of them what about computers something 10 times the size or fridges and tv’s. It just shows how futile our efforts are and that we are really wasting our time.
